Neil Cowley Trio

Doors Open: 7.30pm   Event Begins: 8pm   Event Ends: 11pm

Neil Cowley
Neil Cowley
As a 10-year-old child protégé, London-born Neil Cowley performed a Shostakovich piano concerto to a full house at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, yet he turned his back on the Royal Academy at an early age. Instead, having answered an ad in Melody Maker at 17, he entered the world of pop. “sheer joy.. one of the freshest, most uplifting albums of the year regardless of genre. A modern classic” Mojo “The most exciting pianist to emerge for an age… pulsating power and beauty of a trio at full tilt” The Independent on Sunday “An endearing eccentricity about the music… but emotionally truthful….utterly fresh .. pugnacious and tender-hearted at once” Jazz CD of the Week The Telegraph “There is genuine vision here” The Sunday Times “He can play classical. He can do dance. But when he plays jazz .. Cowley rocks … the Metallica of modern jazz… it does what is says on the tin” The Sunday Mercury

Featuring:
Neil Cowley Trio - Radio Silence is Cowley’s third album and undoubtedly his most cohesive recording to date. It is released in April 2010 on one of the UK’s most exciting Indie labels, Naim Jazz, and though the recording does not stray too far from the Cowley template, it represents the sound of a band fully comfortable in their unique sonic skin. It is the record that Cowley has been working towards, seizing the magical empathy of his unit, who, with thousands of hours under their belt have learnt to breathe and listen as one.

Kate Walsh

Doors Open: 7.30pm   Event Begins: 8pm   Event Ends: 11pm

Kate Walsh
Kate Walsh
Soulful and delicate singer-songwriter Kate Walsh, hailing from Brighton via Essex. 'Complemented by delicate finger-picked guitar and a spine-tinglingly celestial voice - a million miles away from the Essex girl stereotype - Walsh's songs have a fragility not heard since Kathryn Williams last picked up her guitar.'

Featuring:
Kate Walsh - Other songwriters sometimes say ‘how can you write such personal songs? They’re astounded by my honesty. I mean, I really really wish I could write a song for its own sake…you know, think of an interesting subject and write a song about it. But I can’t do that. I just can’t. I write because I have to…I need to get something off my chest. It’s painful, but necessary…” Calling Kate Walsh a singer songwriter is like saying Van Gogh was a cartoonist. Kate is, er, different. A 26-year-old from a sailing town in Essex who’s been likened to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Jane Austen, she’s ferociously independent…in every sense. She adores Debussy, studies cello, listens constantly to Classic FM (and little else), bemoans the demise of vinyl and CDs (she finally got an iPod when iTunes gave her one after her last album ‘Tim’s House’ knocked Take That off the top of the download chart but rarely uses it), is entertainingly scathing about the conventional music industry (“it’s fickle, selfish, impersonal and backstabbing”) – and has established her own cottage industry to do it her way. And when she sits down to write a song you’d better lock up your hearts for you instantly become Kate’s close personal confidante as she bares her soul with shocking candour.

Nick Harper

Doors Open: 7.30pm   Event Begins: 8pm   Event Ends: 11pm

Nick Harper
Nick Harper
Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father's Whatever Happened to Jugula? in 1985.

Featuring:
Nick Harper - To call Nick Harper a superlative singer songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarists' guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows, from personal introspection to biting political satire via a via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud. He often segues from his own compositions to well known covers he makes his own. He takes on Elvis Presley, Zappa, Jeff Buckley, Led Zepplin, Monty Python and Public Enemy (yes on an acoustic guitar!) He also has the alarming ability to break guitar strings almost by sheer force of will and will then change them without dropping a beat. For over a decade he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with his heady mix of virtuoisty, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado.
