No, not wines about to explode, but wines made from grapes where the vines were grown on volcanic soil. The original idea for the tasting was a tasting of volcanic wines by the Institute of Masters of Wine, and also by a recent book on the subject

Tastings on this topic at the University of Bath and at Chapel Arts worked well, and the wines were judged to be above average for their price. Moreover the value of volcanic soils is becoming more widely acknowledged, making the wines easier to find.

A roll call of volcanic vineyards that produce world class wines is vastly greater than might be expected. Some grape varieties are native to volcanic soils, and we shall have some of these. There are also well known grape varieties that thrive in volcanic vineyards. There will be whites and reds and wines from both hemispheres.
