Wines selected and presented by Phil Cooke
This is a seeking value tasting. It will feature grape varieties you know about, but from lesser known wine regions or varieties that are worth discovering.
Most of the wines we drink are either made from grape varieties that, regardless of where they originated, are now grown internationally, and come from wine regions that are well known. But some wines are not like that.
Most people know of perhaps 10, or even 20 grape varieties; but there are about 1,000 in cultivation! And some of them are well worth knowing about. For one thing there are new tastes to discover. Secondly lesser known varieties are difficult to market, so often offer good value.
Often varieties that you do not know about come from unfamiliar wine regions; but not always. And sometimes wine made from a familiar variety comes from a wine region that is unfamiliar. We shall taste wines in these various categories. The linking theme is to taste wines that are from off the beaten track, but potentially suit your taste buds, and offer good value.
There will be at least 8 wines on taste.
As usual there will also be a selection of quality breads and cheeses.
The picture shows vines, some pergola style, in the Alto Adige are of Northern Italy.
